One of the questions I often hear when planning family photos is, " When is the best time of year to schedule our session?
The beauty of living in Sacramento is that every season offers something a little different. From the soft blooms of spring to the golden tones of fall, there are beautiful opportunities to capture your family throughout the year.
As a Sacramento family photographer, I love helping families choose a season and location that complement their style and the overall feel they want for their photos.
Spring I Fresh, Soft & Timeless
March-May
Spring is one of my favorite seasons for family photography in Sacramento. The trees begin to fill in, flowers bloom, and everything feels fresh and full of life.
The greenery and softer colors create a beautiful backdrop for natural, timeless family portraits. Temperatures are generally comfortable, which is especially helpful when photographing families with young children.
If you love light, airy, romantic feel, spring is a wonderful choice.
Summer | Warm, Golden & Relaxed
June – September
Summer in Sacramento can be hot, but the evenings can be absolutely beautiful.
I prefer scheduling summer sessions closer to sunset, when the light becomes softer and warmer. That golden glow adds beautiful dimension to photos and creates a relaxed, natural atmosphere.
Summer is perfect for families who love golden fields, neutral tones, and sun-filled portraits. Because of the heat, choosing the right time and location is especially important.
Fall | Rich, Warm & Classic
October – November
Fall is easily one of the most popular times of year for family photos in Sacramento, and for good reason.
The changing leaves, warm golden colors, and cooler evenings create a beautiful setting for family portraits. Locations like Land Park offer gorgeous seasonal backdrops that photograph beautifully.
Fall is also ideal for families hoping to update their photos before the holidays or create Christmas cards.
Because fall sessions tend to book quickly, I always recommend planning ahead.
Winter | Simple, Intimate & Understated
December – February
Winter is often overlooked, but it can be a beautiful season for family photography.
The softer light, quieter locations, and neutral scenery create an understated, timeless look. Winter can also be wonderful for cozy in-home family sessions, especially with little ones.
While Sacramento’s rainy season requires a little more flexibility, winter can offer something unique and personal.
So, Which Season Should You Choose?
My favorite seasons for outdoor family photos in Sacramento are spring and fall, but there truly isn’t one perfect time for every family.
The most important thing is choosing a setting that feels natural to you. Whether that’s a sunlit field, a beautiful park, or the comfort of your own home, your photos should reflect your family and this season of your life.
And if you have young children, don’t worry about everyone being perfectly posed or smiling at the camera the entire time. Some of my favorite images come from the little in-between moments: the laughter, movement, connection, and genuine interactions.
Those are the memories worth holding onto.
